Iraq war protests

More than 1000 people converged on Carfax from 6pm on the first day of the Iraq war and hundreds laid down in front of traffic, according to the Oxford Mail. Three groups then tried to block traffic at the Plain, Folly Bridge, and the Botley Road railway bridge. Six people were arrested. The next day there was a lunchtime vigil at Carfax and many children left their school classes to take part, 40 from Matthew Arnold school alone (Oxford Mail), some with school approval and some without. Similar schoolkids' protests took place in Thame and Wallingford. After the vigil in Carfax some people went to the Esso garage in Oxpens and chained up petrol pumps
